Installation Damage

Description of O-RING Damage Analysis
This seal surface shows a cut knife edge.

Cause Suggested Solution
The seal is cut by a sharp groove or part. An appropriate groove design
The raw material is contaminated during seal production. Avoid sharp parts.
Seals with inferior quality or excessively low hardness. Use seals with sound quality or higher hardness.
PollutionInstallation Damage

O-RING Damage Descriptive Analysis
Contaminants appear on the seal surface or on the burr part.

Cause Suggested Solution
Adverse processing environment, raw materials, personnel, etc. Note details of the contaminant class, including manufacturing and packaging,
on the package.
The mold is not maintained and cleaned as scheduled. Molds are produced by rubber materials. Mixed use is not allowed.
Synthetic rubber actions cause aging or deterioration.
Explosive Decompression

O-RING Damage Descriptive Analysis
The seal surface shows bubbles, roughness and unevenness, holes, etc.

Cause Suggested Solution
A drastic increase or decrease in temperature Use seals with sound quality or higher hardness
Seals with inferior quality or low hardness Slowly ascending or descending air pressure
Outgassing

Description of O-RING Damage Analysis
The seal shows the seal cannot be completely sealed.

Cause Suggested Solution
The seals used are not suitable for grooves. Avoid use seals with high plasticity.
The seal is in a high vacuum environment with pressure and temperature. Carefully select sales. Do not purchase products priced too low.
Seals with low hardness and high plasticity. Ensure that the seal size is suitable for the prove to avoid gas leakage.
Inadequate seal processing time. Correctly calculate the temperature and pressure ratio.
Select the correct materials.
Overcompression

Description of O-RING Damage Analysis
This seal shows the seal presenting a groove-like plane shape due to overcompression, which causes cracks to appear on the seal surface.

Cause Suggested Solution
Overcompression The seal design should take resistance to heat and chemical reactions
into consideration.
The seal design ignores resistance to heat and chemical reactions. Instead of exerting an excessive force to force install,
apply moderate force.
The seal is in a high vacuum environment with pressure and temperature.
Thermal Degradation

Description of O-RING Damage Analysis
The seal surface shows cracks and workpiece adhesion under high temperatures.

Cause Suggested Solution
Seals under an overheated environment. Use seals with thermal stability.
The seal surface is overly smooth. Select matt-treated seals.
Compression

Description of O-RING Damage Analysis
The seal surface as a flat cross section.

Cause Suggested Solution
Overcompression Switch to seals with a higher degree of compression.
A drastic increase or decrease in temperature Increase the seal hardness.
Seals with inferior quality or manufacturing processes lacking stringency. Ensure the seal quality.
Extrusion

Description of O-RING Damage Analysis
This seal surface shows torn edges in the inside diameter under low pressure.

Cause Suggested solution
Overcompression Seals with sound quality or higher hardness
Seals with inferior quality or excessively low hardness. An appropriate groove design.
Seals larger than the groove. Seal processing time should be adequate.
Grooves irregular or sharp in nature. Carefully select seal. Do not purchase products priced too low.
The seal surface has gaps.
Abrasion

Description of O-RING Damage Analysis
The seal has been compressed horizontally, and the surface has abrasive dust.

Cause Suggested solution
Seals with surface roughness and unevenness Apply a suitable amount of lubricant on the seal to reduce friction.
Seals subject to abrasive dust. Minimize installing seals on inferior grooves.
The groove shifts or inferior groove design of seals. Carefully select seal manufacturers and have a knowledge of seal sources.
A drastic increase or decrease in temperature.
Spiral Failure

Description of O-RING Damage Analysis
The seal surface has cut and spiral marks.

Cause Suggested solution
Seal joint lines are irregular or have rough and uneven surfaces. Correctly install, lubricate and design seals.
No suitable lubricant when setting up seals. Use seals with sound quality and higher hardness.
Design an excessively small groove. Strengthen technician training.
Set up sealers in the horizontally-shifting groove. Sealers with inferior quality or lower hardness.
Technicians with poor installation skills.
Plasma Degradation

Description off O-RING Damage Analysis
The seal shows discoloration. The surface has erosion damage and powder residues.

Cause Suggested solution
Chemical ions impacting electrons. Use seals resistant to electrons and ions.
An inferior groove design. Check the groove design to defy plasma degradation.
The chemical properties of seals and processes are incompatible. Use products that can resist certain chemical properties.
